Salsola Soda Information Also known as roscano, friar's beard, saltwort, barill or Russian thistlewort, it grows naturally throughout the Mediterranean. This succulent is closely related to samphire, or sea fennel. The name 'Salsola' means salt, and rather apropo, as agretti has been used to desalinate soil.

The Italian name agretti is commonly used in English to refer to the edible leaves of S. soda; barba di frate (or friar's beard) is the most common of the Italian names. This plant is not a summer green and should be started early indoors or in autumn.
How do you grow Okahijiki?
Okahijiki is considered to be very easy to grow, but the seeds do need warm temperatures in order to germinate. Wait until daytime temperatures reach 23 to 26°C (73 to 78°F), Sow seed 5mm (¼in) deep in seed trays of compost. The seeds germinate in around 7 to 10 days, occasionally a little longer.
